You might check those: https://www.armbian.com/nanopi-k2/ They are not perfect, but certainly better.
There are also official armbian images too, legacy and mainline kernel. Experimental.

I need to install the linux headers on the NanoPi NEO to compile a driver for the RTL8192CU wifi dongle. I'm running Ubuntu Core 16.04 on the NEO, kernel version 3.4.39-h3. I tried getting the source files from here: https://github.com/friendlyarm/h3_lichee and renamed the "linux-3.4" dir...
Thanks for your quick answer. I tried building for Neo Air with arm-linux-gnueabihf-gcc and it works for me too without any error. Anyone manage to get 32 bit apps to run on the H5? I contacted support and was informed that it is not currently supported.

Supported on Armbian out of the box ... while Neo Plus 2 is not yet 100% supported.Check preview image: https://www.armbian.com/nanopi-neo-plus2/
Third solution. I don't use neither Ubuntu/Debian/Armbian but Yocto for eMMC. You can probably adapt this repository below to your needs but this is worth the effort if you need something custom. https://github.com/auto3000/meta-nanopi-neo-air He wanted to put Ubuntu/Debian on different hardware. Get Armbian and this (headers are already installed by default) will work out of the box. With much more recent and fixed kernel.
When I use the serial console, there is no problem. But over ssh, there is considerable lag, sometimes freezing for several seconds. It will freeze both ssh connections if there are 2. I think this lead to wifi. The raspberry pi doesn't have this problem. Are there wifi parameters to adjust? Disabl...

I have used spi bus with Ubuntu 3.4 on nanopi neo air . I loaded Ubuntu 4.11 recently on my evaluation board, and noticed that the spi driver is missing in the kernel. Nano Pi Neo and Air are fully supported. Image can be burn directly to internal eMMC, where possible (Neo Air) and serial console can be accessed via USB port, so you don't need to solder anything.

Note that kernel 4.9 is not yet working properly ... 3.4.113 is working just fine, within Debian Jessie or Ubuntu Xenial, etc.

Will this run on NEO?

It might, but NEO needs slightly different configuration. So you might need to change it prior to boot or after if it boots ok.
