Windows CE 5.0 change mac address - change reset after reboo

Hi all,
Really desperate for some help.
I am trying to change macaddress in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\DM9CE1\Parms\NetworkAddress in registry without success.
I am using a car diagnostics computer which has windows ce 5.0 on.
Others can change the mac address using ceregeditor however, when i try to change the mac addresss. It changes it until i reboot the unit. Its like the regisrty is write protected or reverts to default on boot. The same goes for any other file. The changes are not persistant.
I have also, tried to flash the unit with a factory firmware NK.bin file. It completes successfully but the boot logo stays the same which leads me to believe the registry is locked/restricted for changes. I am a complete noob and never really tweaked windows ce registry before.
Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
