Using the UART0 in combination with Ethernet

Moderators: chensy, FATechsupport

Hello there,

I was wondering (before I buy the NanoPi NEO2) if this is possible:

I want to sent Tx data and receive Rx data through the UART0 connector of the NanoPi NEO2, in combination with the Ethernet port of the NanoPi NEO2, Is this possible?

The Ethernet port of the NanoPi NEO2 is connected via a crossover cable to a button panel (with a RJ45/Ethernet connector). The button panel is triggerd by ASCII command (Tx), after a button is triggered an ASCII command (Rx) is sent back though the Ethernet connection... So I hope bi-directional TTL signal (telnet/ASCII commands) <> Ethernet is possible?

I hope someone has experience with this (nice looking ;)) tiny board and can sent a response if this is possible?

With kind regards, Jeroen Wolf

Still no response?

In the mean while I have bought this board (NanoPi NEO2) and it now lies in front of me on my table ;)
I have made contact with it via an UART0 < > USB converter .. that works :)

But I have a few questions regarding the Ethernet connection (the main reason I need this board):

If I want to connect this board to a laptop / PC: via Ethernet (directly):
- Do I need a crossover cable or a normal patch cable?
- In the laptop / PC Network settings, do I need to leave the TCP/IPv4 setting to DHCP (IP address automatically) or do I need to adjust to manual?
- If I need to input manual (in the IPv4), what settings do I need to input for IP and Subnet (and/or Gateway)???
- What is the IP address to access to NanoPi NEO2 via a browser (Windows machine)?

I hope someone with experience can help me out with this.

Also any info regarding the bi-directional transfer of UART <> Ethernet ASCII signals via a telnet connection will be much appreciated.

With kind regards, Jeroen Wolf

1) i dont know about the Neo2, but most network-cards nowadays could autosense - so normally you dont need an crossover cable anymore
2) If you connect your pc and the neo2 to a router with dhcp-server then you could leave dhcp. But normally the Neo2 did search for a dhcp-server (normally in your router). If you want to to directly connect the pc wit the neo2 via ethernet, you have to set a manually IP-Adress in the PC (IPv4) and in the neo2 (/etc/network/interfaces or nmtui).
But for the first connect to the neo2 you need a dhcp-server or a serial-console connection to change this setting.
3) For a private Network you could use for the neo2 as IP 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1/24 in nmtui) and as IP for the PC 192.168.1.2
Then you should use 255.25.255.0 as Subnet. For this 2 IPs directly connected you dont need a Gateway.
4) The IP for connecting via Browser will be 192.168.1.1 - after you have configured the IP AND installed a WebServer.
Without a WebServer the Neo2 wouldnt be accessable via Browser.
Firstly after you configured the neo2 IP you could access the neo via SSH-protocol (using puTTY Application on Windows-PC)

Wow, thx guidol for you extensive answers, I will follow your tips/advise and keep you posted if there is progress being made with the local telnet connection.

Thank you...

Cheers, Jeroen
