A64 video resolution

The display I was planning to use with my A64 only supports 16-bit colour depth. However, when I create an xorg.conf with 16 bit depth like so [1], the X server tries to start, shuts down, tries to start again, shuts down, until the system eventually just reboots.
With an 8-bit colour depth, X11 doesn't even start. 24-bit colour depth works fine. Am I missing something, or does the A64 simply not support colour depths other than 24?
