ALERT! /dev/sda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

I have tried this 2 times now to verify. I am using the NanoPi Duo Starter Kit, and have a 64GB MiniPCIe mSATA Half-size SSD installed.
When I flash nanopi-duo_FriendlyCore-Xenial_4.11.2_20171122.img to a uSD card, and run npi-config and choose Boot Device, then D1 Hard Drive and reboot everything goes as planned.

However, I downloaded the latest img last night: nanopi-duo_FriendlyCore-Xenial_4.14.0_20171208.img
And it does boot using the uSD card, but trying the steps above and rebooting does not work. Here is the console output after I chose D1 Hard Drive, and rebooted.

Like I said, I tried this twice using both images, and its repeatable. Friendly please fix this.

Edit: I checked out armbian.com, trying it now on the NeoAir, so fat looks like a great thing. If it works well, I will surly donate, as from what I am reading there, this is how they all should be doing it.

Armbian is a Linux distribution specialized for development boards and provides support, standard updating, userspace consistency, build tools, ... Kernel, which we (all) use, is mostly community work: ours, from the sunxi group(Allwinner chips) and random people. Certain fixes and adjustments are added by board makers. We maintain those kernels and a mixture, a part of this work is eventually accepted into mainline (kernel.org).

Basically, you are already using our work - at least partially - since FriendlyARM images are based on ours, but I can't (nobody can) assure that everything works well. 4.y is a testing kernel, which means things might break. We are working daily to debug and fix troubles. Our group has few full-timers, part-timers and random contributors which are working daily on the project to provide this basic system software.

this is how they all should be doing it.
I am not sure board maker can or want to allocate resources for such operation. Some rather rely on our images and support the project instead of wasting resources to make images which sometimes not even boot. I meant in general, FriendlyARM software support is not this bad.
I tried it on the NeoAir last night. I liked that it was nicely striped down and lean. however you could clearly see on boot up and shutdown that it was slower than the FriendlyElec image release. If i had to guess why maybe because of the CPU frequency setting, but that is just a guess. Honestly I am learning embedded Linux and in no position to judge if its good or not. I just figure if the img was created for a particular device, it should at least run at the same speed as the factory.

This is not exactly embedded Linux since those boards are very powerful compared to classical embedded devices, even some (Neo Air) might look like.

Boards equipped with HDMI and enough memory can actually run a desktop fast enough for daily office work. Embedded devices are usually more limited in hardware and software.

Boot speed can be a feature (to prevent crashing during boot), coincidence and not necessarily a bug. If you claim it's slow(er), you should analyze this to see if its a bug or a feature. (google for Linux boot analysis or similar) We ran the same userspace on many boards with tens of thousands of users and you are the first to expose this. More than a vaguely described problem is needed take a look and fix if there is anything to fix.

Armbian started to exists because factory software support was terrible, virtually unusable. Only hardcore hackers - after they fixed a long list of problems - could use those boards. After few years, some of the board makers improved their support, but they can not reach community support level. This part is more expensive and goes beyond a board design. Support is tied to a Chip/SoC/"CPU" which is shared among many board makers. They are competitors and doesn't have much interest to invest into competitors kernel. Work, done by chip maker, as a common "upper level", is usually rubbish.

On the end of the day, somebody has to fix things ... if we wanted to use those boards for real-life projects and rely on them to do what they were installed for.

igorp, I feel you misunderstood what I was saying. I did not claim there was a bug. I you take 2 NeoAir's one with the factory image and one with armbian NeoAir image, boot them at the same time the factory will boot to the terminal much, much faster.
when you do other things like apt install something, after its done downloading what ever it is and starts to install it, again the factory image will be done installing it much sooner.

All I am saying is when I see this, I have to wonder why this is, and how the person who made the img file for it did not notice it either.

I expect that you want to learn something and provide the exact facts. Than I can explain you why is this or fix if there is something wrong. There are so many other far more important things that a boot speed.

The problem from this topic is directly related to this faster boot. Some vital parts of the system are not loaded ... so you have to choose between speed and broken functionality.
