Ubuntu Mate 18.04 build.

So friends ... let's talk about Ubuntu 18.04 "Core" and its further transformation into Mate.
Next, I will point out all the steps to get a normally functioning (of course, this is quite a bold expression) PC with the "Mate" desktop. So start:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install bash-completion
$ sudo reboot
$ sudo service hostapd stop
$ sudo apt-get autoremove hostapd
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
At this stage, we updated the system and removed the buggy HOSAPD, which in future will bring only disappointment)

Let's start installing the MATE working environment:

$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-desktop
$ sudo reboot

After a reboot, we will encounter some errors, they are easily corrected:

"org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ExecFailed" - ERROR 1
$ sudo chmod 4754 /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
$ sudo chown root:messagebus /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
$ sudo reboot

"org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.PermissionsInvalid" - ERROR 2
$ sudo chmod 4754 /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper

And there seems to be no more errors, but shortcuts or folders are not displayed on the desktop, this is treated by installing the following packages:

$ sudo apt-get install xserver-common
$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core
$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-legacy
$ sudo reboot

Next you need to remove or add the necessary software, just for you.

small update - during Mate installation symbolic links to OpenGL ES/EGL hardware libs was changed to Mesa software lib.

rk3399-eflasher-friendlycore-bionic-4.4-arm64-20181219.img

but got stuck when installing ubuntu-mate-desktop....

Also apparently they fixed the buggy hostapd so I did your procedure anyway but maybe it is not needed anymore.

Well if you have any hints on how to workaround those unmet dependencies... should I try force installing them one by one?

There is a possible solution to this problem:
1. $ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo reboot
2. $ sudo apt-get upgrade
3. $ sudo apt-get upgrade
It is important to reboot after Update.

Now I have not tried to collect Mate on the newest version of the system.
The other day I will definitely try and write about the results.
Try using a "kernel" image labeled "SD", i.e. for direct recording to an SD card and follow-up work from it, without an MMC card (at least for a while).

Well friends ... FriendlyARM threw another riddle
After the release of the new distribution kit (on the old kernel 4.4.143), errors occur when installing Mate Desktop. Let's fix them:
1. $ sudo apt-get autoremove gvfs
This will remove the “broken version” of GVFS and allow you to install Mate-Desktop.

After installation it is possible that pulseaudio will "fall off", I have not cured it yet (the audio registration icon on the panel is not displayed).
As new bugs are eliminated, I will add this post.

Removal of gvfs allowed install of the Mate desktop, thanks for that. As for the Pulseaudio, it seems to be installed but does not show up in any of the menus and no icon on the panel. It is shown as an auto-started application but no sign of it.
