viewtopic.php?f=63&t=2792 the answer is Touch the Apps icon to display the apps drawer. Long-press (press and hold) the app icon you want to add to the home screen. Drag the app to the home screen page, lifting your finger to place the app. A copy of the app's icon is now placed on the Home screen.

Wrong answer.
The OP asked how to add the phone app the Android build. By default, this is not added. You need to rebuild with the RIL etc.

You need to build a custom OS image to include the phone and you need a suitable RIL for this to match with your modem. A USB modem is ideal as this has the multiple serial ports you need for SMS and AT commands etc.
SIMCOM makes modems that work with the boards here and they have a RIL for them that you integrate into your build.
You need to make a number of changes to the various XML files and make changes to the build files to include your new RIL. You also need to make changes to the init.rc to include the RIL service and make sure the ttyUSB ports are accessible from the RIL.
The SIMCOM instructions include a lot of this to make it easier.
