Configuration of R2S as Router+

I don't quite understand what I'm missing here. I have lots of experience with modded router firmware, openwrt, tomato, ect.
I am trying to use a nano r2s as router/gateway for my asus ac86r (running fresh tomato)
but when I try and just setup the r2s openwrt as is, or customize routes and ips, I cannot seem to get it to work as WAN dhcp dns like my router does, and move my router over to wap/switch and disable my own wan functions (bridge port to lan)
I am unsure what I am missing, you would think the software should out of the box work as gateway right? with dhcp wan and static lan? what am I missing?
I'd like to install these in front of a few networks and run ddns and other services to coordinate several remote sites passive data.
