R6C / Debian - Disabling Auto Login Breaks Sound

I flash rk3588-eflasher-debian-bullseye-desktop-6.1-arm64-20240522.img.gz to eMMC on the R6C. I start up the device. The sound works through USB headset but not HDMI monitor.
I do sudo vi /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and comment out the two lines below:
I restart the device, this time it prompts me for my login and password. After login, the sound icon appears as normal at top right. A moment later, an X appears on the icon. If I click on the icon, it displays an error message "Connection to PulseAudio failed...". The sound no longer works in the USB headphones.
Any ideas what could cause this?
