I can't flash either debian-12-core or ubuntu-noble-minimal

Hi,
Downloaded the images from the friendlyelec google drive, unzipped, tried with either dd on a mac or the win32 disk imager on the SD card that was delivered with the R6S (I ordered them together)
When I put in the SD card the red light stays on, does nothing.
When I take out the SD card it boots into the friendlyelecwrt ... Which I don't want.
How can I flash debian or ubuntu minimal on this R6S so it always boots from that? I need some better tools than come with friendlywrt.
